Abstract

Nowadays, the concept of populism has been recovered and reworked as an explanatory key to address ongoing political dynamics. Focusing on the dimension of official campaign content, this paper utilizes the empirical analysis of the political discourse of Jair Messias Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on their official Facebook pages as candidates for the presidency in the 2018 national elections, with the aim of discussing which attributes can be identified and explained with that concept. Using incipient discussions about digital populism, there were points of association and strengthening between these attributes and the language favored by social media and the networked media system. With differences between them, there was the presence of populist elements on both pages and, in the case of Bolsonaro, an articulation between populist messages and resources available in the digital environment.
