Abstract

The review discusses Debora Diniz’s book, Letter from a Mentor: On Research and Academic Writing, written as a letter to early-career researchers. The author explores the challenges of academic life, such as initial insecurities, the mentoring process, and the development of an academic identity, while encouraging an honest and ongoing writing practice. Using metaphors like embroidery, Diniz addresses themes of time, writing, the importance of confronting impostor syndrome, and understanding that perfection is unattainable. By sharing her own journey, she offers practical, supportive advice to make research a less solitary and more collaborative process.
